# The Manual

Translating the manual and other documentation is trickier than translating
Anki's interface: the documentation is not translated on the [translation
site](https://i18n.ankiweb.net/projects). Instead, you edit Markdown files in
[the main Anki repository](https://github.com/ankitects/anki) and submit a
pull request. Some familiarity with Git is required, but you don't need to be
able to build Anki or write code.

The English source pages live in the
[docs-site directory](https://github.com/ankitects/anki/tree/main/docs-site).
The manual itself is located in `docs-site/manual`, and the other sections,
such as the add-on and developer documentation, are in sibling directories.

## Getting Started

1. [Fork](https://docs.github.com/en/pull-requests/collaborating-with-pull-requests/working-with-forks/fork-a-repo)
   the [Anki repository](https://github.com/ankitects/anki) and clone your
   fork locally.

2. If your language already has a subdirectory under `docs-site` (for example
   `docs-site/ru/`), you can start improving the existing `.mdx` pages in it.
   Otherwise, create a new subdirectory named after your language code, such
   as `docs-site/ko/manual/`.

3. Translate the pages you'd like to work on. The pages are written in MDX, a
   flavor of Markdown that supports embedded components. Please keep Markdown
   formatting such as links, images and code blocks intact, and translate the
   surrounding text only.

4. List your translated pages in
   [docs-site/docs.json](https://github.com/ankitects/anki/blob/main/docs-site/docs.json)
   so they show up in the navigation. Each language has an entry under
   `navigation.languages`: to add a page, append its path to your language's
   `pages` list; to add a new language, add a new entry following the existing
   pattern:

   ```json theme={null}
   {
       "language": "ko",
       "tabs": [
           {
               "tab": "Manual",
               "groups": [
                   {
                       "group": "Desktop Manual",
                       "pages": ["ko/manual/intro"]
                   }
               ]
           }
       ]
   }
   ```

   For the supported language codes and the language switcher configuration,
   please see Mintlify's guide on
   [internationalization](https://www.mintlify.com/docs/guides/internationalization#configure-the-language-switcher).

5. Submit a pull request containing your changes.

## Notes

* Partial translations are welcome: starting with the introduction page, like
  most of the existing languages, is perfectly fine.
